January 13th: A Somber Day In Lithuania
If you find yourself in Lithuania on January 13th, you may notice that things are a little different. Some shops and businesses might be closed, and you might see ceremonies around the town. People might be wearing flower pins. And you might look up at apartment buildings to find candles lit beside the window.
What does all of this mean to an outsider?

While getting to know each other better, everyone had a chance to try delicious Lithuanian beer called 'Vilnius' - the name of the Capital of Lithuania.
In the end, This event was remarkably successful to make new connections and celebrate an important historical event of Lithuania.

DOPESHEET
This is an archive commemorating 25th anniversary of January events in Lithuania when crowds of peaceful protesters resisted aggressive Soviet attempt to overthrow independent government.
Various events are held in Lithuania with the main ones planned on January 13 to commemorate 13 people who died when Soviets stormed TV station encircled by peaceful crowds 25 years ago.
As Lithuania became the first country that broke away from Soviet Union in 1990 March an economic hardship boosted by Soviet blockade followed. Inflation was skyrocketing in the begging of 1991.
Incited by Soviet Union Russian and Polish minority workers at Vilnius factories protested the government’s consumer goods price hikes at the begging of the year. Meanwhile supporters of Independence held their own demonstrations and Soviet government mounted a propaganda campaign designed to further ethnic strife.
On January 8 Soviet Union sent special military units to ensure Soviet order and revoke Lithuanian Independence. On January 11 military units began storming various institutions stating with National Defense Department and Press House building, injuring Lithuanian protesters who interfered. Following the attacks large crowds of people started to encircle the main strategic buildings.
During the night between January 12 and 13 Soviet soldiers stormed TV Station which retranslated the news to the world. Tanks drove straight through lines of people killing 13 civilians and injuring 1000. An additional civilian died at the scene due to a heart attack, and one Soviet soldier was killed by friendly fire.
A massive crowd encircled Parliament which could have been the next target praying and singing. Soviet military forces retreated instead of attacking and although military raids continued for several months there were no large open military encounters after the night of January 13 which was later claimed the day of Freedom Defenders.
A non violent defense by massive crowds of peaceful defenders remains of the central peace in the history of Singing Revolutions that broke down Soviet Union in a peaceful way without precedent.
SHOTLIST
January 9, 1991, A car destroyed by Soviet tanks on the street
January 9, 1991, Soundbite (Lithuanian) Local policeman:
Soldiers drive in the city when they want and how they want and they do whatever they wish.
January 11, 1991, Soviet soldiers deployed in Vilnius streets
Soviet soldiers storm Press House building
A protester hurt by soviets
January 12, 1991 Soviet tanks ride as people gather near Parliament to defent it
Recent, Soundbite (Lithuanian), AUDRIUS BUTKEVICIUS, Director of Defense Department during 1991 January events:
We decided that the state will be defended by civilian people that means a non violent defense based on civilians and later we did implement this decision during January 12 and January 13. This defense gave an extraordinary effect when it comes to facing aggression and later destroying Soviet Union as well.
January 12, 1991 Soviet tanks near Vilnius tower
The night of January 13, vs of tower storming and casualities
Archive, 1991 January, Soundbite (Lithuanian), VYTAUTAS LANDSBERGIS, Chairman of Lithuanian Supreme Council-Reconstituent Parliament during 1991 January events:
Dear people, we are probably loosing Television and Radio. This is a very painful loss in our situation and our fight, but this is far from over. They might think today it is enough for them, but they might also take more buildings each day.
Landsbergis arrive
Recent, Soundbite (Lithuanian), VYTAUTAS LANDSBERGIS, Chairman of Lithuanian Supreme Council-Reconstituent Parliament during 1991 January events:
Back then , a thought came into my mind, a short consideration, what should I do when they would brake into parliament. (Cutaway) Should I shoot, just like Salvador Alende and die? Should I fight back? Or should I not shoot? There was a consideration and I had decided that let them do what they wish. It is I am who is at his post, these are my duties and I will stay here till the very end.
